Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $16 billion , what are they planning to do with it ?

By // No comments:
Saw a post of Mark Zuckerberg on my wall stating that Facebook bought Whatsapp and the entire WhatsApp team will now be part of the organization. Facebook has expressed their interested on buying snapchat before but they turned down the offer. Now they bought another messaging platform for $16 billion dollars (I'm starting to think that mobile application or web companies are becoming over valued). WhatsApp has around 450 million active monthly user, no wonder an internet giant such as Facebook will be very interested on taking them.

I can't think of any synergy between the two groups for now, primarily because Facebook's revenue generation revolves around advertisements and WhatsApp on the other hand promises an ad free messaging experience to its users. Well since WhatsApp has a high rate of interaction or engagement, Facebook probably want to use it to increase the engagement of Facebook users as well.

Like Instagram, WhatsApp will be working independently so you can be assured that you $0.99 yearly subscription of ad-free messaging application will still be the same.

Here is the post

I’m excited to announce that we’ve agreed to acquire WhatsApp and that their entire team will be joining us at Facebook.

Our mission is to make the world more open and connected. We do this by building services that help people share any type of content with any group of people they want. WhatsApp will help us do this by continuing to develop a service that people around the world love to use every day.

WhatsApp is a simple, fast and reliable mobile messaging service that is used by over 450 million people on every major mobile platform. More than 1 million people sign up for WhatsApp every day and it is on its way to connecting one billion people. More and more people rely on WhatsApp to communicate with all of their contacts every day.

WhatsApp will continue to operate independently within Facebook. The product roadmap will remain unchanged and the team is going to stay in Mountain View. Over the next few years, we're going to work hard to help WhatsApp grow and connect the whole world. We also expect that WhatsApp will add to our efforts forInternet.org, our partnership to make basic internet services affordable for everyone.

WhatsApp will complement our existing chat and messaging services to provide new tools for our community. Facebook Messenger is widely used for chatting with your Facebook friends, and WhatsApp for communicating with all of your contacts and small groups of people. Since WhatsApp and Messenger serve such different and important uses, we will continue investing in both and making them each great products for everyone.

WhatsApp had every option in the world, so I’m thrilled that they chose to work with us. I’m looking forward to what Facebook and WhatsApp can do together, and to developing great new mobile services that give people even more options for connecting.

I've also known Jan for a long time, and I know that we both share the vision of making the world more open and connected. I'm particularly happy that Jan has agreed to join the Facebook board and partner with me to shape Facebook's future as well as WhatsApp's.

Jan and the WhatsApp team have done some amazing work to connect almost half a billion people. I can’t wait for them to join Facebook and help us connect the rest of the world.

Globe is proposing for Bucket Data charging or tiering scheme

By // No comments:
After the issue with the Fair Usage Policy, here is another hullabaloo from Globe. The 2nd largest telecom company in the country is proposing for a tiering scheme where in higher volume or bandwidth will require a more expensive payment.

Globe is proposing a tiering system where a maximum volume limit is set for unlimited services; a higher volume is set for a bigger sum; and no limit for a premium fee

How about our supposedly "UNLIMITED" data service?

“The NTC mandated Globe to submit copies of all its agreements with its subscribers on “unlimited data” so that the agency could thoroughly review the terms stipulated on fair use policy and Pre-Termination clauses to determine whether the subscribers were informed of the terms of their agreement,” Cordoba stated in the letter.

Based on complaints, Globe subscribers alleged they signed-up and are paying, or had paid, for “unlimited” data service but instead are getting “limited” data service.
I'll monitor the development of this proposal.

Why the new Globe Gadget care is a scam, avoid additional P399 monthly fee

By // 2 comments:
Globe's new policy is to automatically enroll new postpaid plan subscriptions to Gadget Care. It's a P399/month insurance subscription that is paid on top of the enrolled plan that covers theft and damage. The first month is free.

The problem with this policy

The problem with this policy is first, it is never mentioned during the plan application or enrollment. 2 years ago, this option is explicitly asked to subscribers if they want to avail during enrollment or application. When I recontracted my line this January 2014 , it was never mentioned by the agent processing my application.

Is this another Globe Scam?

Fast forward to Feb. 12, 2014 I received a message stating that a Gadget Care subscription I have will now auto renew because the free month has passed. WTF! I called Globe hotline to clarify this as I dont remember any instance that I enrolled to such service.
The agent I spoke to said that the new policy now is every contract now is enrolled to Gadget Care automatically. With the first month free, subsequent months will be charged to customer for P399/month.
I have it deactivated.

Had I ignored this message, I will never know that I was enrolled to an insurance program from Globe. And If I wasn't able to cancel such subscription, I will be required to pay P399 each month for a service I dont enrolled for and didn't even need.

Question now, Is this another scam from Globe? Previously we had the issue of "unlimited" internet and now this auto-subscription with auto renew. Globe, what is wrong with you?

How to cancel Gadget Care

You have check first which Gadget Care plan you are on. In my case, I'm on Plan 399.
Then send GADGETCARE <plan> OFF and send to 8888

Play Gameboy Advance games on Windows Phone with VBA8

By // No comments:
I tried VBA8 and its working great. You can play any Gameboy advance games on your windows phone (I'm using Nokia Lumia 1020) as long as you have a copy of the ROM file.

For this post , I obtained a ROM file from coolroms.net and loaded the file to VBA8 via skydrive. Vba8 allows user to import rom files saved on MicroSD card or Skydrive. Since I'm using Nokia Lumia 1020, the only option I have is to upload it to skydrive (Nokia Lumia 1020 has no expandable storage slot).

Note : I dont know much about the legality of ROMs so please be cautious.

Here is a screenshot of Pokemon Emerald I tried playing on my Lumia 1020.

Download ROMs from the internet (hint: you can download from the site I mentioned above but I don't encourage it)

How to fix LTE connection problem with Globe

By // No comments:

LTE connection but not LTE speed

I always experience being connected to LTE using my iPhone 5s (or even my Nokia Lumia 1020) but the speed or latency is too slow to be able to use Facebook or other apps conveniently , or lets say noticeably slow. Even Speedtest app fails on start (the time after the application is opened and before the "Begin Test" button appears) due to "connection problems" so you can't even tell if its speed or ping/latency problem. I noticed that this kind of problem usually happens when the my connection frequently switches from LTE or 3g or Edge and then back to LTE .

Back to 3G

Disclaimer: I'm not even sure if this is the correct solution but it works for me so I guess its worth a try
To solve this kind of problem, what I do is to turn off LTE and just use 3g. You will see that the response time of web based applications like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Games will be quicker as to compared when on LTE.

And be patient too, this doesn't happen to me everyday but if it does, its a pain in my beautiful a**.

Fastest I've ever got on Globe LTE on postpaid

11.9 mbps

Speed test done using my computer tethered to my Nokia Lumia 1020 . Rarely go over 5mbps on LTE when I'm using my iPhone 5s (same locations). Is it safe to say that Nokia Lumia 1020 as a better hardware?

LTE Speed? Nah... When the rest of the world is that speed on 3G :D

Anyway, 11.9 mbps is the best i've got on Globe Telecom's LTE network. That was recorded Dec. 31, 2013. And its no use if you can only average 2-3mbps even on LTE connection. Better switch off the LTE and use 3g to save battery. Plus it'll only eat up the allocated (ridiculously low) 3gb per month bandwidth cap being imposed by Globe.

Nokia Lumia 1020 actual day time photos

By // No comments:
We've posted an article before about the quality of photos the Nokia Lumia 1020 can take during night time. This time , we will posting pictures taken during day time. You be the judge as to how the photos fair compared to other photo capturing devices like mobile phones, point and shoot cameras or even DSLR.

Disclaimer : Most of the time the settings are in auto. I'm not good in photography and there's no post processing done on the photos below so please be kind to me

7 reasons why I don't like using Facebook app for Windows Phone

By // No comments:
Note: Windows Phone app used is the one made by Microsoft. As of this writing (2/4/2014) there is no official Facebook client made by Facebook yet for windows phone.

Facebook on Windows Phone takes longer time to load items
Loads and loads updates then boom "where having trouble getting data" whether you are connected to high quality wifi connection or 3g and LTE

5 maximum simultaneous upload of pictures
Limited to only being able to upload 5 pictures at the same time and then boom again, "where having trouble getting data"

Low resolution graphics
Just compare the resolution of images being used by the windows phone app to those of the android and iOS version.

No photo comments
Now allowed to attach pictures on comments

No uploading of photos on Facebook Pages
Even on the pages you own

Facebook app not loading completely
Blank as your excitement to open the app, you will have to close the app again and open it to check if it will open successfully the next try

Attention whore
You cant switch apps or you can't let the phone go to sleep while uploads are being done. She wants your full attention. Or else you will be repeating the upload process again

Why Globe or any other Telco's Data Cap is a CRAP

By // No comments:

We want to protect the experience of 97% of our base against the 3% who take up more than their fair share of our network bandwidth.

Globe sent out a tweet with a infographic included explaining the "real deal of fair usage policy" (check it out below)
This is a good timing as i've recently posted why I think the data cap is unfair so this infographics somehow works as their reply with their question. Then one portion of the graph hit me :
What can i do with 2g? : Update facebook status, send tweets, send text emails
Have you not tried being just a normal (average) Globe subscriber and tell us if you can even do that on your network's 2g ? Why would i update status or send tweets when it will take me a minute to load the screen and another minute to send my post or tweet and then only to find out they're not sent ?

A small subset of heavy users are using most of the bandwidth causing congestion. But there is one big gaping hole in that theory. NETWORKS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!

And here is an explanation on why we all think its a crap.  A user nismo shared this video on comments on yugatech

If ISPs were really concerned about congestion, they should be selling less service to fewer people

Most network congestion is not cause by The amount of data used but the number of people, programs and devices using the network at the same time
